Rosario Islands Tour

Colombia South America rosario islands coconut bikini swimsuite - Things to do in Cartagena

Rosario Islands Tour

Heading to Cartagena but want to escape the hustle and bustle? Look no further. I’m going to be giving you an inside look into the Cartagena Rosario Islands tour, offered by This Is Cartagena. Of course, there are other suppliers you can purchase this tour with. But after further research, I found that was one of the best tour operators.

Explore the pristine beaches of the Rosario and Barú islands during this day trip from Cartagena. Travel off the coast of Colombia via speedboat or standard boat (depending on the option selected) to the Corales del Rosario National Park. Swim and snorkel in the azure waters, relax on the soft sand beaches, and take in the picturesque natural surroundings. National Park fees, lunch, and snorkel equipment were included in the cost. Overall, it was a fantastic tour. Now let’s start with what the day looks like exactly!

Departing Cartagena

8:30a – If you are staying within the walled city or close to it in the Cartagena de Indias city proper, round-trip transportation should be included. Pick up was in your typical shuttle bus. Clean and comfortable, what more do you need?
8:45a – We arrived at the port which was a bit chaotic. There are TONS of tourists flooded and lined up by the gate with their printed off tickets (definitely recommend printing your tickets and not relying on your phone for scanning). Keep in mind, there is a mandatory tax due ON the premise of COP $15,500 (~$5.50). Cash only, no cards allowed. At this time, we provided our boarding passes/tickets.

9:00a – Afterwards we were OFF to paradise. It was about a 45-minute ride with some interesting things to see along the way.
10:00a – Indeed, we arrived to paradise and were offered welcome drinks of sweet passion fruit. We had a few hours to relax and enjoy the calm, crystal clear waters. Unlike powdery sand in the Caribbean, I did find the beach here a little rocky.

Tropical Paradise in Colombia

An archipelago about 22 miles southwest of Cartagena, the Islas del Rosario (Rosario Islands) consist of 27 small coral islands. Including some tiny islets. The islands are surrounded by coral reefs, where the color of the sea is an incredible combination of cerulean and turquoise. The whole area has been declared a national park, the PNN Corales del Rosario y San Bernardo.

Water sports are popular, and the two largest islands, Isla Grande and Isla del Rosario, have inland lagoons and some tourist facilities, such as hotels and a resort. The islands can be visited in a day trip from Cartagena, although to really appreciate them and to avoid the crowds, consider spending a night or two here.

Authentic Colombian Lunch

12:00p – Afterwards, around noon, we heard the first bell ring (DING!). That bell sound meant those of us who wanted to snorkel now had the opportunity to line up, and head to the boat for our snorkeling spot. Meanwhile, for those who didn’t want to snorkel they could enjoy the pool table and other activities on the island. The snorkeling was an additional cost (it wasn’t expensive) and included all snorkel equipment needed. The snorkeling reef had plenty of fish around, which was wonderful. It was so fun to watch them nibble off of the coral. Wish I had seen turtles… glad we didn’t see any sharks.

1:30p – We were back at the beach by this time and it was time for lunch (when you heard the second bell ring – DING!). Lunch was a buffet and consisted of delicious fried fish, coconut rice, plantains, and salad. Everything was SO tasty! You were allowed seconds on any of the fixins (minus the fish lol). They also had lobsters available for purchase if you wanted a little something extra.

Arroz con coco blanco (coconut rice) is a traditional Colombian rice dish from the coasts of the country. This coconut rice is an easy and simple side dish that goes well with seafood. You can get the recipe from My Colombian recipes here.

Watersports and Departure

2:30p – After lunch, we head back down to the beach for some naps, water sports, or relaxing in the water. The water can be a bit rocky until you get farther in so I do recommend water shoes, or you could rough it like me. #FlinstoneFeet

3:30p – Afterwards the third bell rang (DING!) and that officially meant paradise was over. Time to head back to the hustle and bustle of Cartagena!
